Flourishing connections through cultural garden in Berri

A culturally significant garden is flourishing at Berri Regional Secondary College, thanks to a partnership with SA Water as part of Pirku-Itya – the utility’s Reconciliation Partnerships Program.

Pirku-Itya is a Kaurna word meaning ‘for community’, with this initiative providing annual support for grassroots community events and projects run by not-for-profit organisations that contribute to reconciliation in South Australia.

Aboriginal Education and SAASTA Leader David Binney said the garden celebrates the rich traditions of the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee, reflecting Aboriginal culture from the past, present and future.

“Developed in close consultation with the local community, the space serves as an inclusive hub for cultural engagement, sustainable practices and educational opportunities,” David said.

“Featuring native plants traditionally used for food, fibre and medicine, the garden allows students to explore cultural uses of flora, such as creating Lilly Pilly jams and beauty products.

“The garden provides a space for shared learning and understanding, fostering connections that will have lasting benefits for students and the wider community.

“Aboriginal artwork and a representation of the River Murray form part of the garden’s design, creating an environment where students can learn about and celebrate the cultural significance of the land and waterways.

“The site also serves as a venue for NAIDOC Week and other reconciliation events, uniting the school community in shared celebrations.”

SA Water's Manager of Brand and Community Connection Kellie McDonald said this partnership is one of the ways the utility is working with Aboriginal communities across South Australia to recognise and build awareness of the important role Traditional Owners play in caring for land and water.

“We are committed to working collaboratively with groups like Berri Regional Secondary College to achieve our shared vision of a sustainable future,” Kellie said.

“Underpinning these collaborations is our ongoing commitment to reconciliation and building strong, respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities and promoting cultural awareness and understanding.”
